# How to Verify Catch-All Emails Without Damaging Sender Reputation

Catch-all domains accept mail for any address, so no verifier can promise you a mailbox exists. Here's the policy we run across 2M scraped leads a month: secondary verification, what the tools can and cannot tell you, and the guardrails that keep catch-alls from burning your domains.

## Quick Answer: The Policy We Run at 2M Leads/Month

**Every catch-all goes through a second verifier. We send only to the ones that upgrade to high-confidence valid. The rest get discarded.** No raw catch-alls ever mix with verified leads, and no verifier's "catch-all" status is treated as permission to send. That single rule keeps bounce rates in the safe zone without throwing away the 20-35% of B2B lists that live behind accept-all domains.

## Why Catch-Alls Break Verification

A normal domain answers an SMTP probe honestly: this mailbox exists, that one doesn't. A catch-all domain answers *yes to everything*, `real.person@domain.com` and `xkcd9982@domain.com` both come back "deliverable." Your verifier isn't broken; the question is unanswerable at the SMTP layer. That's why the status exists, and why anyone promising 100% catch-all resolution is selling certainty that cannot technically exist.

The stakes: if the mailbox doesn't actually exist, your email hard-bounces at send time. Enough of those and providers mark you a careless sender, the damage lands on your domain, not the list vendor.

## What Secondary Verification Actually Does

A second pass with a different verifier isn't running the same test twice. Good secondary tools bring different evidence to the table: alternative SMTP conversation patterns, greylisting retries, mailbox-full and quota signals, historical delivery data from their network, and name-pattern matching against the domain's known format. That evidence upgrades a slice of catch-alls to **high-confidence valid**, typically 30-60% of them in our experience, and leaves the rest genuinely unknown.

- •**Send the upgrades.** Secondary-verified catch-alls bounce at near-normal rates in our campaigns.
- •**Discard the rest.** The unresolved remainder is where the 10%+ bounce rates hide. The leads feel free; the domain damage isn't.
- •**Never skip the step because the first tool said "verified."** Many tools mark catch-alls optimistically, that's the subject of my [Apollo re-verification piece](https://warminboxes.com/blog/apollo-verified-emails-second-verification).

## If You Insist on Sending Unresolved Catch-Alls

Some operators quarantine unresolved catch-alls into a separate campaign instead of discarding them. If you go that route, treat it like handling something flammable, and never let it share infrastructure with your main sends:

- •**Dedicated domains and inboxes only**, a bounce spike must have nothing to burn except the quarantine pool itself.
- •**Micro-batches:** 10-20 catch-alls per inbox per day, mixed nothing else.
- •**Hard stop rule:** pause the campaign the moment hard bounces cross ~3%; review at 2%.
- •**Feed the results back:** every delivered email is now a confirmed-valid address; every bounce is a confirmed-invalid one. The quarantine campaign is itself a verifier, an expensive one, which is why we prefer doing it with software first.

**The rule underneath all of this:** bounce risk must never be pooled. Catch-alls in the same campaign, or on the same domains, as your verified list means your cleanest leads pay for your dirtiest data. Isolation isn't paranoia; it's how the blast radius stays survivable.

## The Full Workflow, End to End

- •**1. Clean first:** dedupe and strip role/disposable addresses with the [CSV Cleaner](https://warminboxes.com/csv-cleaner), no point paying to verify junk.
- •**2. Primary verification:** split the list into valid / invalid / catch-all.
- •**3. Secondary verification on the catch-alls only:** send the upgrades, discard the unresolved.
- •**4. Segment by provider** with the [ESP Segmenter](https://warminboxes.com/esp-segmenter), catch-all-heavy domains skew toward gateways and Microsoft tenants, which need matched senders anyway.
- •**5. Watch bounces daily** for the first week of any new list; the stop rules above apply to every campaign, not just quarantines.

## Bottom Line

Catch-alls aren't a mystery to fear or a risk to ignore, they're a probability problem with a known process. Verify twice, send the upgrades, discard the unknowns, isolate anything experimental, and your bounce rate stays boring. The senders who get burned are the ones who treat "catch-all" as either "valid" or "delete", both are guesses, and guessing with your domain reputation is the one bet cold emailers should never take.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is a catch-all email address?

A catch-all (accept-all) domain is configured to accept mail for ANY address at that domain, real or invented. When a verifier probes it, the server says 'yes' to everything, so the verifier cannot distinguish a real mailbox from a fake one. The result is the 'catch-all' or 'accept-all' status instead of valid/invalid.

### Can any tool fully verify a catch-all email?

No, and be suspicious of any tool that promises it. The domain's server literally answers 'deliverable' for every address, so SMTP probing can't resolve the truth. Good secondary verifiers improve the odds with signals like mailbox-full responses, historical delivery data, and pattern analysis, upgrading some catch-alls to high-confidence valid, but a residual bounce risk always remains.

### Should I email catch-all addresses at all?

At scale, only after secondary verification. Our policy across roughly 2M leads a month: every catch-all goes through a second verifier, we send only to the ones that upgrade to high-confidence valid, and we discard the rest. Sending raw catch-alls alongside verified leads is how clean campaigns inherit dirty bounce rates.

### What bounce rate do catch-all emails cause?

Unverified catch-all lists commonly bounce 5-15%, far past the ~3% level where mailbox providers start degrading your sender reputation. Secondary-verified catch-alls behave close to standard valid addresses, which is exactly why the re-verification step earns its cost.

### Why do so many B2B domains use catch-all?

Some companies configure it deliberately so misspelled addresses still arrive; many security gateways and hosting setups default to it. In B2B lists, 20-35% catch-all share is normal, which is why 'just delete them all' throws away a meaningful slice of your addressable market, and why a policy beats a shrug.
