# Should You Disable Open Tracking in Cold Email? We Turned It Off Fleet-Wide

Open tracking promises data and delivers two problems: a pixel that spam filters recognize and numbers that stopped meaning anything after Apple Mail Privacy. Here's why we run tracking off across a fleet sending 1M+ emails a month, what changed when we did, and the only metrics worth optimizing now.

## Quick Answer: Off. Everywhere.

We run **open tracking off across the entire fleet**, every client, every campaign. The pixel is a spam-filter fingerprint (Microsoft punishes it hardest), and the data it returns has been fiction since Apple MPP and security scanners started opening everything. **Optimize on replies.** If you genuinely can't let go of opens, use a custom tracking domain and treat the numbers as a rough trend, never a truth.

## What a Tracking Pixel Actually Is (And Why Filters Care)

Open tracking works by inserting an invisible 1×1 remote image with a unique URL into your email. When the image loads, the sequencer logs an "open." Which means every tracked email announces two things to receiving filters: **this message contains hidden remote content**, and **this sender is running campaign software**, precisely the pattern that separates bulk mail from the one-to-one correspondence filters protect. For Microsoft specifically, whose models junk anything marketing-shaped (see the [Outlook piece](https://warminboxes.com/blog/cold-email-outlook-spam-gmail-inbox)), the pixel is one of the first things to remove.

Worse is the **shared tracking domain** most sequencers use by default: your pixel loads from the same domain as tens of thousands of other senders, including the worst ones. Their reputation becomes your fingerprint. If tracking stays on for any reason, a custom tracking domain isn't optional; it's the minimum. But it only fixes the shared-reputation half of the problem, the pixel remains a pixel.

## The Data Is Fiction Now Anyway

- •**Apple Mail Privacy Protection** pre-fetches images for Apple Mail users whether or not a human ever opens the message, every one logs as an "open."
- •**Security scanners open everything.** Microsoft Safe Links/ATP, Mimecast, Proofpoint and friends fetch remote content while screening. B2B lists are full of these tenants, machine opens within seconds of delivery, no human involved.
- •**Image blocking hides real readers.** Plenty of genuine opens never fire the pixel at all.

Put together: the metric inflates where you're being scanned and undercounts where you're being read. That's the answer to the classic "70% opens, zero replies" panic, machines are opening, humans aren't seeing it. The tell in your own data: "opens" clustering seconds after send, uniformly, on gateway-protected domains (the [ESP Segmenter](https://warminboxes.com/esp-segmenter) shows you which those are).

## What We Saw Turning It Off

When we standardized on tracking-off across the fleet, nothing was lost and two things were gained. Placement improved at the margin, most visibly on Microsoft segments, where marketing fingerprints cost the most. And teams stopped making bad decisions from fake data: no more rewriting subject lines because "opens dipped" when what actually happened was a scanner config change on three recipient tenants. The campaigns didn't go dark, they went honest. Replies, positive replies, bounces, and weekly seed tests tell you everything opens pretended to.

## How to Optimize Without Opens

- •**Reply rate** is the primary metric, unfakeable, and the only one connected to revenue. A/B test subject lines against replies, not opens: split 200+ sends per variant and count conversations.
- •**Positive-reply rate** diagnoses targeting and offer; **bounce rate** diagnoses list quality.
- •**Seed placement tests** replace opens as your deliverability signal: send to Gmail/Outlook seeds weekly and read the verdicts with the [Header Analyzer](https://warminboxes.com/header-analyzer). Opens were always a placement proxy, seeds measure it directly.

**If you keep tracking anyway**, some teams need the comfort during early testing, then: custom tracking domain per sending domain, opens read as directional trend only, never as absolute truth, and turn it off once volume scales. "On for a two-week test, off at scale" is a defensible compromise. Shared-domain tracking at full volume is not.

## Bottom Line

Open tracking made sense in 2018: cheap data, tolerant filters. In 2026 the trade is inverted, you pay real deliverability (especially at Microsoft) to receive numbers that scanners and Apple have already ruined. Every serious operator I know has either switched to replies-plus-seeds or is one bad Outlook month away from it. Turn it off, run a seed test weekly, and optimize on the metric that pays.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Does open tracking hurt cold email deliverability?

Yes, measurably, an open-tracking pixel is a hidden remote image that spam filters recognize as a marketing fingerprint, and Microsoft's content models weigh it especially hard. It's rarely the single cause of spam placement, but it's a persistent negative signal you're paying for in exchange for data that's largely fiction anyway. We run tracking off across our entire fleet.

### Why are my cold email open rates high but replies zero?

Because a large share of those 'opens' aren't humans. Security scanners (especially on Microsoft tenants and gateways like Mimecast) fetch every pixel while screening mail, and Apple Mail Privacy Protection pre-loads images for its users regardless of any human opening anything. A 60% open rate with zero replies usually means machines are opening and people aren't seeing it, check placement, not subject lines.

### Do custom tracking domains fix the deliverability problem?

They fix a different problem. A custom tracking domain removes the SHARED tracking domain risk, being fingerprinted alongside thousands of other senders using your sequencer's default domain, which is genuinely dangerous. But the pixel itself remains a marketing fingerprint, and the numbers remain distorted. If you must track, custom domain is mandatory; better is not tracking.

### What metrics should I use instead of open rates?

Reply rate is the primary optimization metric, it's unfakeable and it's the one that pays. Support it with positive-reply rate (targeting/offer quality), bounce rate (list quality), and periodic seed placement tests (deliverability truth). Everything you'd tune with opens can be tuned better with replies against a controlled A/B split.

### Should I keep click tracking in cold email?

Click tracking wraps every URL through a redirect domain, the same fingerprint problem, plus link-rewriting that filters inspect hard. Since first-touch cold emails shouldn't carry links anyway, there's usually nothing worth tracking; when you do send a link in later touches, send it bare and, if you need attribution, use a UTM parameter instead of a rewrite.
