# DMARC for Cold Email: Exactly When to Move From None to Quarantine to Reject

p=none, p=quarantine, or p=reject, the community gives three confident, contradictory answers. Here's the staged enforcement plan we run on sending domains: what each policy actually does to cold email, the alignment check that must pass first, and the week-by-week upgrade path.

## Quick Answer: The Staged Plan

**Weeks 1-3:** `p=none` with `rua=` reporting on, you're collecting evidence, not protection. **Gate:** reports show ~100% of your real mail passing with aligned DKIM. **Weeks 4-6:** `p=quarantine` (step `pct` 25→100 if nervous). **Week 7+:** `p=reject` once quarantine ran clean. Never enforce before alignment is proven, and never stay at none longer than a month, both mistakes cost you, in opposite directions.

## What Each Policy Actually Does

- •**p=none**, "verify, but take no action." Failing mail still delivers normally; you get aggregate reports (rua) showing who's sending as your domain and whether it aligns. Zero protection, full visibility.
- •**p=quarantine**, failing mail goes to spam. Real protection, forgiving failure mode: a misconfiguration junks your mail rather than vaporizing it.
- •**p=reject**, failing mail is refused outright. Maximum trust signal, maximum blast radius if something's misaligned. Also the ticket to [BIMI](https://warminboxes.com/bimi-checker) (with quarantine at pct=100 also qualifying).

The thing the one-line Reddit answers skip: DMARC doesn't check whether SPF and DKIM merely *pass*, it checks whether they pass **with a domain that aligns with your visible From domain**. A sequencer signing DKIM with its own platform domain passes DKIM and still fails DMARC. That's why enforcement without verification is Russian roulette with your own campaigns.

## Phase 1, p=none Is a Listening Post, Not a Policy

Starting record (host: _dmarc)
v=DMARC1; p=none; rua=mailto:dmarc-reports@yourdomain.com

The `rua` tag is the entire point of this phase, skip it and p=none is just a checkbox. For 2-4 weeks, the aggregate reports answer three questions: Is every legitimate source (your sequencer, your inbox provider, anything transactional) passing? Is DKIM aligned, `d=yourdomain.com`, not the platform's domain? And is anyone else sending as you? Fix what the reports surface: usually it's enabling custom DKIM in Google Workspace / Microsoft 365 (walkthroughs in the [Record Generator](https://warminboxes.com/record-generator)) and correcting the SPF include set, verify with the [SPF Checker](https://warminboxes.com/spf-checker), and confirm end-to-end with a real send through the [Header Analyzer](https://warminboxes.com/header-analyzer).

## Phase 2, Quarantine, Once the Reports Say So

Enforcement, soft-launched
v=DMARC1; p=quarantine; pct=25; rua=mailto:dmarc-reports@yourdomain.com
→ pct=50 after a clean week → pct=100

The gate is evidence, not courage: move when reports show effectively 100% of your genuine mail aligned and passing. After each pct step, send seeds to Gmail and Outlook and confirm `dmarc=pass` in the headers. Your own campaigns shouldn't feel anything, if they do, alignment wasn't actually done and quarantine's forgiving failure mode just saved you from finding that out at reject.

## Phase 3, Reject, and Why It's Worth Finishing

After 2+ clean weeks at full quarantine, flip to `p=reject`. Beyond the marginal trust gain with providers (Microsoft's scoring in particular weighs enforced DMARC), reject closes the spoofing door completely, and spoofing is a cold emailer's hidden reputation risk. Secondary sending domains are attractive impersonation targets exactly because nobody's watching them; a spoof run against a p=none domain generates complaints that land on *your* reputation. Reject makes that impossible, permanently, for free.

**The two failure modes I actually see:** senders who enforce on day one and quarantine their own campaigns for a week before noticing, and senders who set p=none in 2024 and never came back. The staged plan exists because both are self-inflicted. Enforcement gated by reports takes about six weeks and roughly an hour of real work.

## Cold-Email-Specific Notes

- •**Every sending domain gets the same treatment**, the staged plan is per-domain, and secondary domains are the ones attackers pick.
- •**sp= matters if you send from subdomains:** the organizational policy covers them unless overridden; don't let `sp=none` quietly undo your enforcement (it also disqualifies BIMI).
- •**Prewarmed infrastructure sidesteps the whole timeline**, our domains ship with aligned SPF/DKIM and enforced DMARC on day one, which is precisely why they place the way they do.
- •**Verify, don't assume:** the [DMARC Checker](https://warminboxes.com/dmarc-checker) grades your current record and tags in ten seconds.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Which DMARC policy is best for cold email?

The destination is p=quarantine or p=reject, enforcement is what mailbox providers reward, and Gmail/Yahoo's bulk-sender rules require DMARC at minimum p=none with a path to enforcement. But the best policy TODAY depends on alignment: enforce before your SPF/DKIM domains align with your From domain and you'll quarantine your own legitimate mail. Staged rollout: none (with reports) → quarantine → reject, gated by evidence.

### Does p=none hurt cold email deliverability?

p=none satisfies the letter of the bulk-sender requirements, but providers increasingly treat enforced DMARC as a positive trust signal, and p=none provides zero spoofing protection, which itself becomes a reputation risk if someone spoofs your sending domain. Treat p=none as a diagnostic phase you pass through in 2-4 weeks, not a place to live.

### Will moving to p=reject break my cold email campaigns?

Only if alignment isn't actually passing, which is exactly what the p=none reporting phase proves before you move. If your rua reports show 100% of your sequencer's mail passing DKIM with an aligned d= domain, enforcement changes nothing for your own sends; it only stops impostors. Move policy only after the reports say so, never on a calendar alone.

### Do I need DMARC on cold email sending domains that send low volume?

Yes. The Gmail/Yahoo requirements catch senders by primary-domain volume and behavior, and Microsoft weighs enforced DMARC in its own scoring. More practically: every checker your prospects' IT teams run will flag a missing DMARC, and secondary sending domains are prime spoofing targets precisely because nobody watches them.

### What does pct= do in a DMARC record?

pct tells receivers what fraction of failing mail to apply the policy to, pct=25 with quarantine means a quarter of failing messages get junked, the rest treated as none. It's a soft-launch dial for the nervous: step quarantine in at 25→50→100 over a couple of weeks. Note that BIMI requires pct=100 at quarantine or reject.
